THE HAPPY GOLDEN YEARS

Fifteen-year-old Laura lives apart from her family for the first time, teaching school in a claim shanty twelve miles from home. She is very homesick, but keeps at it so that she can help pay for her sister Mary’s tuition at the college for the blind. During school vacations Laura has fun with her singing lessons, going on sleigh rides, and best of all, helping Almanzo Wilder drive his new buggy. Friendship soon turns to love for Laura and Almanzo in the romantic conclusion of this Little House book.

I am excited to start this book, it’s been a long time since I read it last. Decades! When I was younger and watched this series on television the story leading up to the big KISS between Almanzo and Laura was BIG talk in my 5th grade class. So exciting for us girls. Giggling all around.

What I remember most about the two is that the book and the television has their courtship and relationship very different, so I am excited to read the closer to the truth story in the book. I think it’s a sweeter story.

One thing I know for sure is Almanzo being completely comfortable (in the 1800s no less!!!) when Laura asks him if they can strike the word “obey” from the wedding vows: “I know it is in the wedding ceremony, but it is only something that women say. I never knew one that did it, nor any decent man who wanted her to.” Made their relationship perfect in my eyes.

As for cooking I am thinking we will try Laura’s cornbread stuffing! Will see what we vote on after reading the food mentioned in the book and seeing which recipes are noted for this book in our cookbook!

Happy Reading!

Peace.
