My year-long study of reading about feminism and literature about women by women continues with these reads.
How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
I first read Caitlin’s work in How to Build a Girl and I absolutely LOVED it. Seriously go get a copy and read it! ESPECIALLY if you have a daughter. So when this book was recommended to me I said OH! I’ve read a book of hers. I like her voice! (not literally, although I’m sure her voice is as lovely as it sounds in my head!) A couple of her statements were so close to mine it made me laugh out loud!
“What do you think feminism IS, ladies? What part of “liberation for women” is not for you? Is it freedom to vote? The right not to be owned by the man you marry? The campaign for equal pay? “Vogue,” by Madonna? Jeans? Did all that good s*** GET ON YOUR NERVES? Or were you just DRUNK AT THE TIME OF SURVEY?“
This book is definitely NOT for everyone, because well, people……However young woman should read it, to learn about being female and what feminism is and is not. Any one with a good sense of humor, who does not take things as extreme literal, would enjoy this read. I laughed out loud many times reading this book. However, I have a friend who would not ‘get it’ at all. I WISH she’d read the book and learn. So IF you are pro-woman, give it a read. IF you want to explore a view of what feminism is, read it!
The feminism stuff is golden.
FOR HER OWN GOOD
by
Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English
“A splendidly bold and readable review of medical, psychological and social theory since the industrial revolution.”
—The Guardian (London)
The above review is a good concise one sentence review of this book. This is definitely a history book that women should read. Understanding how we as women have been treated medically, psychologically and physically over decades and how, although we have overcome huge hurdles, we have so much further to go. That being said, reading about how men in the medical community treated woman and any ailment they had in years past is so horrific it’s hard to believe some of it was in my lifetime! It was for sure in my mothers and grandmothers lifetime. Shameful, cruel and so unnecessary. This book is definitely not a light beach read, it is textbook college reading type information, but written to be read quite easily. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think in the time we are living in right now it is very necessary to school ourselves on where we were, be thankful for how far we have come, work to do better and make sure we don’t do backward slides. Making our reproductive rights and other healthcare rights as women should never be a bargaining tool for congress. We should be vigilant in the medical field. I never take my rights as a female for granted. I will fight to leave this world better for my daughter, nieces, grandchildren and all little girls. That they may live free of a patriarchal society.
Equality for all.
Peace.
I’m Judging YOU!

I started following Luvvie on facebook awhile ago. She makes me laugh right out loud! She also says what needs to be said! In a more serious light she makes me check my privilege, think outside the box more than I do and educates me on how to be as a white female. I appreciate her views and her thoughts and she has taught me a great deal. This all being true, last year at this time I was at BookCon and saw SHEWASTHERE. I about flipped! So very very exciting. She is definitely one hundred percent genuine. I love that!
This book that Luvvie wrote is a definite must read. YOU WILL LAUGH! I laughed to the point of tears many times. She has an amazing way with words. BUT the main thing about her book is that you LEARN. Take what she is saying to heart. Think on it. What she is saying is truth. We need to do better people.
Peace.
