Malcolm X: The ReRead

When I planned this reread, it was before George Floyd was murdered, before the latest protests, before Nick Cannon quoted the prophet Elijah Muhammed and spouted Anti-Semitism. I started reading along with others before and then during the latest happenings of injustice. They have never stopped happening, the murders have never slowed, the hate has never dimmed. It is the same. It now has permission from our president, it is now filmed, it is blatantly okay with evangelical Christians. Those things have always been there, there is just a magnifying glass on it now. What would Malcolm say now? As I watched Who Killed Malcolm X on Netflix and rewatched Malcolm X the movie, while diving into more reading and researching articles and watching Malcolm’s speeches on YouTube, I saw that although I did previously actually think there was good change, I was very wrong. Malcolm could have said the words he spoke during his life today, tomorrow and next week and they would be a current truth. It is abhorrent and despicable. I do so wish this book was taught in schools extensively. I so believe in the power of words and peoples narratives of the story of their life. We white people, especially white followers of Jesus, should be so ashamed- we have to do immeasurably better than this. We know nothing of the horror that has been committed every second of every day and IF we are silent, we are compliant. That is our truth. Do better. I include myself in this.

Peace.
