I picked this book up for three reasons at a local thrift store recently. One, the art and colors! Two, it says Elijah. Three, it is a Hebrew legend translated from Yiddish to English. All these are of great interest to me.
I looked the book up when I got home to see what I could learn about it. The author was a Polish born Jewish writer in Yiddish. He has won awards! Isaac Bashevis Singer is the author’s name. I found several of his books, including a book he wrote about his childhood in Poland, of Jewish life in the city. I ordered the book used from Amazon to read and can’t wait to learn more. There are several other books he has written that I am going to try to get at our library here. I love reading about different cultures and beliefs from mine, and especially one that is so closely related to what I believe. Creates so much understanding, and knowledge is always a good thing.
‘Why are you reading that? ‘So what are you reading?’ ‘BUT how do you know what to read?’ are common questions posed to me. Seriously, there are not going to be enough days in my life to read everything I want to read. I love to learn, so I research by reading. I love to escape into a good story. So I read. I love to read the same book as others and discuss it, so I read. I have many subjects I am passionate about, so I read. I like to reread books to see if I feel the same way many ears later or the book is a comfort to me and I read it as a security blanket in trying times. Reading has always been my vice as well as the way I learn best. It is a gift I am very thankful for. Access to books is one of my many privileges I try not to take for granted.
So when I find a book like Elijah the Slave I pick it up. See what information is on or in the book cover itself. Do some research, enjoy the reading process. Try to think if there is some one or place I should donate it to. Then look for my next find when I’m through. All amazing fun for me!! Sometimes I do keep the books, especially my favorite reads. But most of the time I donate or trade at a Little Free Library or Bookmobile.
