Girl in Pieces

October 15, 2016: I’ve been reading this in small spurts. It’s very powerful. Very real. I want to take it in and digest it. So far it reminds me of Go Ask Alice by Anonymous …gut wrenching read so far, necessary and good.
October 19, 2006: I’ve finished the book! This was such a different experience than I imagined going into the book. The writing is excellent, you can feel the emotion of the characters and it takes you on the journey that they are on. I am so glad I read this book slower than I usually read books. I couldn’t read a lot in one setting anyway, it affected all those painful memories I had as a teen. The real angst, feeling lost, pain and trying to survive in the landscape of high school. I could hear girls that I love, their voices, in the characters and picture their faces. I was at a cross between throwing up and crying during parts of reading this book, because, although this is fiction, this is REALITY for so so many girls and boys. It breaks my heart. I appreciate the author adding her personal note to the end. It completes the story so well. Included as well are several links and phone numbers to crisis centers and organizations, which is an amazingly kind smart thing to do. I will be buying my own copy, as well as copies to give to others (my current copy is a library book).
I usually take away something or things from every book I ever read. Sometimes books have even saved me from myself in the moment. I believe this book will do that for many. The author asks at the end of the book to us as readers, “What’s your solace? Do you know? Find it and don’t stop doing it, EVER. ” She adds more to this but that’s the take away I took for myself. My solace? Reading, cooking and spreading my love for both to others.
