I just picked up an ‘ in excellent condition’ copy of Number the Stars at a used book sale. Number the Stars is an excellent read written by Lois Lowry. Told from the perspective of a 10-year-old girl during the second World War. Although the events of Number the Stars are based in actual historical fact, the specific story is Lowry’s own mixture of fiction, oral histories, and research. The novel takes place in Denmark in 1943, three years after the Germans invaded Denmark. The title of the book is taken from
Psalm 147:4
4 He counts the number of the stars;
He calls them all by name.
The book is usually read in 3rd or 4th grade.
I found, when researching for this book, a book about Lois herself and took it home from the library to read. It is a beautiful book filled with photos and memories and pieces of history from her life. Fun fact discovery to me was her absolute LOVE of new life, infants. I share this love, joy.
” I like new babies. I like looking at them.”
I have read a good number of Lowry’s books. The Giver is a favorite of many but NOT of mine at all. Number The Stars is my favorite. The Anastasia and Gooney Bird books are also enjoyable.
