Eleanor Roosevelt

unnamed

Four years ago this coming January, I started a book club called Read it and Eat it with a few friends and our daughters, who were in college at the time. We followed the book Read it and eat it by Sarah Gardner.  Each month has four books to chose from, questions and recipes. We voted to start with The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt.

The read was fascinating to me. I fell in love with Eleanor and her plight. I loved her attitude, some of the parts of her were not as likable to the other members of our book club, which I understand, she was far from a perfect woman. However, none of us are, and I believe she had her heart in the absolute right place and did the next right thing with what she was dealing with. She overcame a childhood filled with sadness, loneliness, and huge losses. She was an amazing champion for women, children and the poor. Since Eleanor could not really cook well, other than the scrambled eggs she is rumored to have cooked every Sunday night at the White House, on book club discussion night we had scrambled eggs, flourless brownies (war rations) and jello, which did not turn out because seriously who can actually make one of those jello molds??!!

If you’ve never read about Eleanor, I would suggest trying it. I love history and this was very intriguing. When I looked this morning to see what one of the photo challenges on instagram was for today ‘book with a name in the title’  was one. I immediately thought of this book and our first month of what has been an amazing experience of reading books in our book club.

Book on friends.
