A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share.
Little Free Library book exchanges have a unique, personal touch. There is an understanding that real people are sharing their favorite books with their community; Little Libraries have been called “mini-town squares.”
My friend and I spend about once a month traveling to, and searching for, Free Little Libraries to stock, trade and explore. During this time she has also built two of her own. We have enjoyed seeing all the many different style libraries and enjoyed trading or simply just filling them up. There is one by a favorite restaurant of ours that we merely just fill up every time we are there. This particular Free Little Library is near several colleges and little neighborhoods, so it’s fun to see it get constantly used. With school libraries shuttering and kids having less and less access to books, this is sure to be a blessing to children. It’s a lot of fun for adults as well and a whole lot of fun for us to try to find them from the national map on freelittlelibrary.org . We’ve done some crazy driving maneuvers and a lot of laughing at ourselves while searching for these little gems to trade books and leave books.
Some of the libraries we have found.
It’s always fun to see all the different styles and types.
Book on.
Peace.
