Coretta Scott King

I picked up Coretta Scott King’s book My Life, My Love, My Legacy at the library the day before her letter was not allowed to be read on the Senate floor by Elizabeth Warren.  Excellent timing, on my part. How crazy.

I have just finished the book and am amazed at the grace and tenacity Mrs. King lived her life. Her desire to be peaceful in protest, strong in her commitment to fight for human dignity for all is just amazing, considering the cost to self she endured. One thing that struck a chord with me was her mother’s desire for her children to be educated and the work they had to do to pay for that education, Mrs. King also believed this. The inadequate schooling offered up to them as colored children back then was deplorable. Unfortunately a lot of that remains today. I too believe in good schools. A good education provides endless multiple opportunities.  The answer to most problems with gang activity and crime ridden areas stems from lack of good public schools. Reading is such a key to a good education. Tutoring programs are so much more than people give them credit for.  Give children every opportunity out in the world by educating them and the life of gangs and crime won’t be the only attractive option.

The book reads like someone telling you a story, very well written, covering multiple years, topics and events. I have just touched on one that is, at this season of my life, something I too am fighting for. Read the book and be inspired.  A life map of how to be grace personified in the fight for justice.

Peace.
