Book One Done! Classic Read. Daddy Long-Legs

Daddy Long-Legs
Book One of Summer Reading

“I think that the most necessary quality for any person to have is imagination. It makes people able to put themselves in other people’s places. It makes them kind and sympathetic and understanding.”
― Jean Webster, Daddy-Long-Legs

What a delightful book! A classic I had no idea about. This is a quick read and full of charm. I love the main character Judy aka Jerusha. She is like Annie, Anne of Green Gables and Jane Eyre all rolled into one. Considering that this was written in 1912, the sheer independence of the character is astounding.“I believe absolutely in my own free will and my own power to accomplish – and that is the belief that moves mountains. ”  Realizing that women didn’t even have the right to vote when this book was written is something I kept in mind while reading. The main character, an orphan living in an orphanage, is given the gift of education with her only requirement of letter writing to the benefactor. The writing is superb in this telling, you are instantly drawn into the characters experience. The books mentioned like Jane Eyre and Tennyson, Treasure Island, Wuthering Heights which she loved (YAY BRONTE GIRL) was a fun find while reading along. I felt a wonderful kinship with this character and this was an excellent summer reading choice. So glad I picked it up at a thrift sale because it was a classic Puffin book that I had never heard of!

Summer Reading!

Peace.
