The Adventures of Laura and Jack

Between the dark and the daylight,

When the night is beginning to lower,

Comes a pause in the days occupations

That is known as the Children’s Hour.

Chapter One: Laura and Jack

As long as Laura could remember Jack the bulldog was always there, he had a stocky body, he had short legs, he had short light-brown fur, with darker-brown streaks through it. He also had a big strong head, and a big square jaw. Jack looked stern and fierce, but he was gentle around the kids. This was the time when Ma, Pa, Mary and Laura lived in the little cabin in the Big Woods. There is a book called Little House in the Big Woods. I need to read that yet. I never have to worry about wildcats and bears who roam the forest and neither does Laura. Jack the bulldog always stayed up at night to guard the little house. Jack is the best watchdog, he was very caring and protective about his family. I have a bulldog Winnie. She is protective of our family too.

Laura was very little when she was in Wisconsin, her sister, Mary, was a bit older. Laura loved to play with Jack, Pa told Mary and Laura not to stray into the woods. Even though Laura didn’t stray in the woods, there were plenty of things to do, and if you were with Jack, it would be like an adventure. When the family lived in the country it was calm and peaceful. No neighbors or houses in sight from where the family lived. All the Ingalls could see was land and trees.

Summer came and there was plenty of animals for Jack to chase! Jack often chased birds and squirrels.  For a bulldog Jack was very fast. My bulldog can be fast too. There were plenty of animals for Pa to go and hunt. Ma had a garden behind the cabin. Jack protected Ma’s garden from the deer who lived close by, so they did not eat it. In the daytime the deer won’t come, but at night the deer were brave and jumped over the fence and ate the fruits and vegetables. Good thing the family had Jack as a watchdog, if they didn’t have Jack they won’t have had any fruits and veggies.

Fall

When fall came the Ingalls family gathered food for winter. When the weather was just right, Pa killed the pig. That was Laura’s favorite part of the season. Pa let everyone have the tail of the pig, the tail was Laura’s favorite part of the pig. Gross!!!  Mary and Laura roasted the pig together.  When the pig turned brown Mary and Laura ate the meat off the bones. Jack got the left overs which were the bones.

Winter

Winter was very cold! The family sat beside the fireplace. Pa told stories and played is fiddle. At night wolves howled, and Pa had promised that the wolves would never get in. Laura got closer to Mary and snuggled up tight because she was scared.

The move

Charles made an announcement, “I have decided to go see the west. I made an offer on this place and we can sell our cow and our calf.  That will be enough to go to the western country.” ” Do we have to go?” asked Caroline, ” It’s nice and cozy in the cabin. We can’t cross the Mississippi river when the ice is cracked.” Charles said it was worth a try. He also said that if the family was going to leave that year, they must go right away. The house and the land was sold.  The wagon was almost ready to go. Early in the morning the Ingalls family was ready to go. Mary and Laura sat in the backseat. Ma and Pa sat on the seat in the front and the baby Carrie sat on the Mom’s lap. Jack the bulldog was going to walk all the way to the west. That’s a long way. My dog will not walk that far. When the night was beginning to lower the family all slept under the stars, that would be fun. All day they went through rivers, streams, land, and strange woods. Pa traded to very tired brown horses for two black ponies. These ponies are called western Mustangs;  strong as mules, gentle like kittens.  Laura and Mary got to name them and named them Pat and Patty. It was a long trip they drove through the Big Woods of Wisconsin, across Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. Jack walked the whole way. It was a very long way for one little dog!!!!
