FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

First Day of Fifth Grade for my son today! My daughter graduated college after six years, a couple years ago. My kids have quite the age gap! So this means since I took her to preschool in 1993 I have been driving a child to school for 24 years straight! Let me tell you, I’m over it. The passing of the decades has made much amusement for me in the parent pick up and drop off lanes! I could write a book! It has provided me with a lot of extra reading time. This is a huge plus!

My son is starting the year reading Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. He has always been enamored with the Disney movie and books of the old Robin Hood. So he is quite happy this is the book he is starting with.  He will also be studying Robert Frost! We just saw one of the houses Frost lived in at an outdoor museum village in Detroit, Greenfield Village, so he is excited to learn even more. My child attends a Charlotte Mason Ambleside school, which is classical learning style. This will be his second year. He very much likes this style of learning and the small class sizes. He was in a Montessori before this and would  have continued on it for the upper grades, but to get into the school, which his sister graduated from, is a straight lottery, and we haven’t won yet! This is a good fit for him for now. So we enter into year two! Last year of elementary here we go!

Robin Hood by Howard Pyle
Howard Pyle relates the story of the English outlaw Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, compiling the traditional material into a coherent narrative in a colorful, invented “old English” idiom that preserves the flavor of the ballads, and adapts it for children.

Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost

Whether he’s capturing a cold New England winter or the simple beauty of an old abandoned house, four-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Frost creates magic. This stunning celebration of his best-loved work includes over 25 poems, including “Mending Wall,” “Birches” and, of course, “The Road Not Taken.” Henri Sorensen’s gorgeous images perfectly complement each verse.

Happy School Year 2018!
Peace.
