Mitzvah the Mutt

A friend is someone we turn to  when are spirits need lift.

A friend is someone we treasure

Mitzvah is a small dog with short brown hair, his ears are small and floppy, one hangs down a little, while the other stands up. Mitzvah has large brown eyes, long nose, crooked mouth, and a tail that never stops wagging.

“I lived in a cadge outside of Ruben’s Pet Shop, there was a sign that said free puppy if brought to a good home. Even if I didn’t get picked up by anybody I still enjoyed watching people walk by, cars going by….”

One day Mr. Ruben told his dog, ‘Mutt’, that’s what he calls the dog, ‘the new apartment I’m moving to doesn’t allow animals, I have to find you a new home.’  The dog tried to tell him that he wasn’t an animal, animals are at zoos….. He didn’t seem to understand the dog, that’s the problem with people….. Dogs can understand human words, but all humans hear is bow-wow! Or, Ruf! Ruf! When Mr. Ruben goes to work the dog stays home, when he gets back from work he tells the dog all about his day.

“The next day came, and Mr. Ruben took the dog to work with him! Later that day the dog saw a mother, and a brother and a sister. The dog watched as they entered Cohen’s Bakery. Both children where holding a cookie, Yummy! They only poured water in the cage. When the children left they left crumbs on the sidewalk, without thinking the dog pushed the door open, ran over the crumbs, just then the mother shrieked, ‘Where’s Rachel? We have to find her!!’  I guess the mom wanted to find the girl, and if the dog found her, she would give the dog extra crumbs.

“Maybe she went to the toy store?” the boy suggested. Mitzvah went into the toy store, the boy was walking right behind her. Suddenly, Mitzvah smelled the cookie which led the dog straight to Rachel! The Mom looked at Rachel and said, “Honey, I didn’t know where you where, did you know that you frightened me?”  “Sorry mother, I thought you heard that I was coming here.” Mitzvah got extra cookie crumbs while Rachel explained. “Now where did you come from little dog?” The little family followed the dog back to Ruben’s Pet Shop, and there was Mr. Ruben waiting and watching for the dog. “There you are Mutt!” He cheered happily. The Mommy told the man about finding Rachel, all of a sudden Mitzvah was a hero! Mr. Ruben put Mitzvah back in the cage, he had a special treat, it was a big burger! The children watched the dog eat, they laughed and giggled. The Mom asked Mr. Ruben if she could bring Mutt home, and that he would be great for the children. “Would you let me take Mutt home?”  Mr. Ruben said yes, and that he would be happy with the family.
