Shakespeare 2019

We are starting the year fittingly by reading The Twelfth Night.

Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a comedy believed to have been written around 1601–1602 as a Twelfth Night’s entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as Cesario) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man.

The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623.
I am looking forward to reading this one. There are so many quote worthy passages, rich in meaning!

“If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.”
“Journeys end in lovers meeting.”
“a young woman in love always looks like patience on a monument smiling at grief”
