The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy by Shakespeare first published in 1602, though believed to have been written in or before 1597. The Windsor of the play’s title is a reference to the town of Windsor, also the location of Windsor Castle, in Berkshire, England. Though nominally set in the reign of Henry IV, the play makes no pretence to exist outside contemporary Elizabethan Era English middle class life. It features the character Flagstaff the fat knight who had previously been featured in Henry IV. It has been adapted for the opera on several occasions. The play is one of Shakespeare’s lesser-regarded works among literary critics.
We made it through Troilus and Cressida, barely. It is listed as a problem play for a reason. It was a lot of research, defining words and finding differing versions to read to get a grasp on it! ALAS, we lost some fellow readers along the way. For those of us who finished it we feel we deserve a metal of some sort! I personally feel very accomplished. I do still adore the language, we just really had to plod through this one and work at it to get the just of it all.
On to Merry Wives, which reportedly will be very enjoyable.
