Lizzie Borden

We have finished our read of The Trail of Lizzie Borden. So much information and so many things I did not know! The prosecution had absolutely nothing to convict her on. I’m not too sure it should have ever gone to trial. I absolutely believe she was innocent. The book is very well written, extremely informative and sets to right the facts of the real trial as it uses the transcripts. The back history and explanation of each and every player in this event in time was seriously fascinating. The layout of the town, descriptions of the rich and the poor, the religious, the biases of immigrants and the lower class and the working class could have been written today. The fact that this too includes women just makes me sick. Not much has changed. I actually wonder if this could have been solved today. I am thinking not. There is still much to be said for being white, wealthy, and having a good lawyer and although I think Lizzie was innocent, these facts did help her. If the maid had been accused I believe she would have had an immediate trail and also been hung immediately. Thus the difference. I don’t want to say too much more as reading and researching this more thoroughly was so much fun I want the enjoyment and surprises to be there if you read this book.

The Sunday Buddy Readers had varying opinions and long discussions as there was so much text we ended up with 20 plus discussion questions most weeks this month. It was so much fun to see the conclusions each of us came to. Many of us would love to go to the town this took place in and see it all up close.

If this murder mystery has intrigued you I highly recommend this book.
