January Children’s Classic Read

This beautiful Fairy Tale The Princess and the Goblin was so much more than I thought it would be. It is just wonderful. The grandma relationship was just beautiful and to those of us who have or have had a wonderful grandma, it was like a hug.

I realize why the library book I borrowed was tattered and still in use as to lose this story would be a tremendous loss. I purchased a copy for myself and did fill out a form online that the library has to request and advocate for titles they need to stock.

The Princess and the Goblin is a children’s fantasy novel by George MacDonald. It was published in 1872 by Strahan & Co., with black-and-white illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Strahan had published the story and illustrations as a serial in the monthly magazine Good Words for the Young, beginning November 1870.

So many layers of symbolism and even a “girl power” hugely feminist theme even though I’m sure this wasn’t the intended theme or writing, it in fact has so many gems.

There are also passages that are so relevant to today.

“That is the way fear serves us. It always sides with the thing we are afraid of.”

“We are all very anxious to be understood, and it is very hard not to be. But there is one thing much more necessary.’ ‘What is that, grandmother?’ ‘To understand other people.”

I am anxious to read The Princess and Curdie the apparent continuation of this story that I knew nothing about.
