#DecemberChill December 3, 2021bookhippieAdult Fun BuddyRead with tons of fun things to post and discuss over on Litsy. December 3-5 I’ll be re-reading this, Dr. Zhivago -for a #DecemberChill buddy read. I first read and fell in love with this book when I was a mere 17. I am actually not reading any of the books shown, but instead reading a version translated by my favorite Russian translators of classic literature: Larissa Volokhonsky and Richard Pevear. It is enroute to me and I cannot wait to start reading it. People tend to loathe or love this book. That goes for the movie as well and some love the movie, loathe the book. I happen to love both. First published in Italy in 1957 amid international controversy, Doctor Zhivago is the story of the life and loves of a poet/physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago’s love for the tender and beautiful Lara, the very embodiment of the pain and chaos of those cataclysmic times. The tea shown is from @russianteatimerestaurant– when I cannot be there in person, this has to suffice. It is my absolute favorite tea. If you’re ever in Chicago be sure to stop there. Everything is delicious and the staff is lovely. The cup was a gift from Mr Book Hippie. Pevear and Volokhonsky masterfully restore the spirit of Pasternak’s original—his style, rhythms, voicings, and tone—in this beautiful translation of a classic of world literature. This is the music I’ll be listening to! Related Articles Simone in November 3 weeks ago Sundays in September September 30, 2024
