KRACKOLATES
CHOCOLATE KRACKOLATES
Breakfast cereals were introduced to Britain between the wars but were slow to catch on. As one food writer harrumphed, “No one who can get good porridge would want to eat those nauseating American proprietary cereals.” However, the dual pressures of convenience and American glamour meant that by the time Call the Midwife opens in 1956, cereals were becoming ever more common. From Chummy’s bran flakes to the quasi-ubiquitous cornflakes, the bright branding of cereal packets feature in many a Poplar home in the series. But they weren’t just a feature of breakfast: This ridiculously simple no-cook recipe was actively promoted by Kellogg’s and was a favorite to make with children. The original Kellogg’s pamphlet calls the Rice Krispies version chocolate krispies, while the cornflakes one was krackolates, a name that surely deserves a revival.
Well this was a bit of fun. It was quick and easy to make and quite sweet to eat. A lovely way to start a SUNNY Monday!
